In my last post, I shared some scripture related to this story, which appears in three gospels: Matthew, Mark, and John. You should check it out if you haven’t already read it. Having read these things, I asked Jesus: “Lord, what would You say to me about this sign? What is it pointing to? This is what I believe I heard from Him:
This was a sure sign of My deity, and it was for My disciples alone, since no one else saw it. They knew God healed through the hands of the prophets, and they knew He made the oil flow and not cease (2 Kings 4:1-7) and prolonged the stores of the widow of Zarephath. (1 Kings 17:9-16) They knew He healed the poisonous waters through Moses (Ex 15:23-25) and the poisoned stew through Elisha. (2 Kings 4:38-41) Therefore, changing the water to wine meant I was a prophet; healing the nobleman’s son at a distance meant I was a great prophet. Healing the cripple at the Pool of Bethesda started things on the way to being deeper than expected. Feeding the 5000 showed me as king, father, provider–but walking on the water provoked a different response, didn’t it? (The disciples worshiped Him when they saw Him do this.)
Walking on the water didn’t fit the profile of the temporal king they thought I had come to be. Walking on the water proved I was more than they expected. In that moment, they knew I was God. Yes, afterward the filters kicked back in and they wavered, but this was a milepost–the dawning of holy fear and reverence.
